JH had "it" too, but I believe in a musically limited scope.
Anyway, it's not really helpful to us to compare players from different eras (even though it's fun), but then it's not really fair on them either. And in any case, there are thousands of 'best guitarists ever' all over the world who are superbly talented, almost all of whom we've never heard.
Cheers.

Regarding Tommy, he is technically and musically very versatile. He has his own bag of tricks and will leave behind a new legacy of fingerstyle playing. He's played in many different styles of musical settings and among a great variety of very accomplished musicians (not just guitarists), and whever he goes he leaves those musicians drooling with amazement. You see, they know that TE has "it" - and whatever "it" is, he has it in abundance. TE is a musician's guitarist...

If you take a step back, taking off the lenses of personal tastes and learned attitudes, and look with humble enquiry (and are experienced and knowledgeable enough in musical criticism and appreciation), you would see some truth in this, and also be able to appraise his contribution in a unbiased manner...

I have to split my reply over a few posts.
JH was undoubtedly talented and original compared with his contemporaries within his own genre, and he had a few new tricks and licks to boot, leaving a legacy of god-like status among many would-be imitators - you can still hear him in half the solos that rock guitarist play today. But he was what I would call a guitarist's guitarist; and not a musician's guitarist....

Look, you can love Jimmi how much you like, but there's no denying this guy's technical capabilities. he's just crazy. look at some more things he does. the things he plays are just insanely difficult . he's superbly talented
