I think there are parts of quicksand where the ground is a bit more solid, so that's one reason the others might not be sinking.
I saw a video just like this in french class 5 years ago (about the quicksand on the walk to Mont St. Michel). Pretty interesting.

It's a lot of fun, but it's not everywhere. The bay is huge, and there are small pockets of quicksand. Our guide was in a pocket; that's why we weren't sinking, because we weren't in it.

I saw a similar video from some show where there was a similar trip (might have even been in the same place since it was along the beach) and people all starting stomping up and down on a patch of quicksand that went up and down like a waterbed and the host of the show, not the guide got stuck and needed to be pulled out.
