Its not just the sound, people tend to use what they are used to and are comfortable with, that way their creativity can fly. My introduction to "hardware" was a fostex fd4 which was a nightmare to use compared to hitting play and record on a tape recorder, the stress ruined many a jam session until I learned how to use it. Same with anything else that has any degree of complexity. Rule of art: know your media

Good point. Although in this 'discussion' the topic was vsti sounds compared to hardware not necessarily the medium on which the sound was recorded. HD recorder, MD recorder, tape DAW etc.
Some particular pieces of hardware can as you mentioned be a nightmare and as always you should study your media in all it's depth.
