Purim Torah Reading in Tampa

Back

Rabbi Uriel Rivkin reads the Torah on Purim 5767 (2007) in Tampa. By tradition the Torah portion is from Parshat Beshalach in the Book of Shemot (Exodus) 17:8 - 17:16. In order to Lain the Torah (read it in the traditional chant) one must memorize the melodies for the whole Torah as the Sefer Torah (hand-written Torah scroll) has no musical notation as well as no vowels. In addition to the congregation member being honored with an Aliyah, Rabbi Rivkin is flanked by a few people. One is the Gabbi who is responsible for calling congregants to the Torah and offering a Mishaberach (special blessing) to them on the completion of their Aliyah on Shabbos on holidays, and also helping with the reading. Each congregant honored with an Aliyah says the blessings before and after the reading and also remains at the Bimah (the table for reading the Torah) until the next reading is finished. By tradition there must be three congregants at the Bimah during the reading. The Torah reading is a central part of morning prayer services on Shabbos (Saturday) as well as on Holidays. A shorter reading service of only three Aliyot is done on Mondays and Thursdays during Shacharis (the morning prayer order). The shorter version is what we see here.

The public reading of the Torah is a tradition well over two-thousand-years-old, and the rules and the melodies of the reading are equally venerable.

I wish that I grew up in Jewish culture...I just finished taking my last semester of Hebrew at my Bible College. Definitely, the best education I have ever received. As far as your conversation, I see where it would be hard to view Jesus as the Messiah from a Jewish perspective. However, I think that the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings point to him as the Messiah.

796220=Read Daniel 9:24-27, it speaks about the appointed time of the Messiah. He had to come, be crucified and resurrect on the third day before the destruction of the Second Temple. In 70 A.D. many years after Yeshua was crucified, resurrected and ascended, the Roman Army under General Titus smashed Jerusalem and destroyed the Second Temple in fulfillment of that prophecy. You have a choice, either Yeshua (JESUS) is the Messiah or there is none.

796220=If Rabbinic Judaism is true and Yeshua is not the Messiah, from that perspective HaShem has not done anything for the Gentiles for 2000 years and that is contrary to everything revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures. HaShem is not just the God of Israel, he is the God of all mankind.

(continued)Yeshua has called Israel to be a light to the whole world (Isaiah 49:6 and Isaiah 42:6) to reveal God to everyone and has brought the whole world both Jew and Gentile to know and worship the God of Israel, the promises made in Genesis 12:1-3 has been fulfilled. He is the most influential Jew in all of history, he is clearly the Jewish Messiah.
