He was not an idiot. A show man, too flashy, ok, I will give you that. Most Bosses end up their days behind bars. Go to the Wikipedia page for the Gambino family. Way after Gotti, members of the family are still being put away for life. It's part of the life. If you get caught, you're finished. The same applies to the other families.
