I saw ELP perform 6 times over the years. Only in their last shows did they finally put Lake at center stage and Keith & Carl on either side. This set was so much better than Palmer in the center... I wish they'd thought of it sooner.

Does anyone remember the California Jams We used to watch them with sound off and listen to them simo-cast on our FM station outta Cleveland. Keith Emmerson tied to his seat and roatating upside down while he played his piano. Concert pianist. He is so talented. I saw him solo at Carneige Hall

I totally agree that Greg's voice is the voice of this great group. It may not be a virtuoso voice, but it's distinctly his and it makes this band unique. What always amazes me about ELP is the kind of music just 3 guys were able to make, even when on stage and not backed up my track upon track of overdubs. ELP rocks!

I have to disagree i think it was the panist which made the band most unique but voice is definantly unique

It was the sum of the three parts that came together to make ELP the Supergroup they were. Emerson on keyboards was the backbone of the group and the lead. Palmer's skill on percussion was a key to the group's virtuosity, but Lake's voice also made the group special. His guitar work was almost a throwaway, but together these three guys made music that was incredible in it's day. Never to be duplicated.
