I disagree and I am a Brit. Those wonderful aforementioned legends never undertook an event and beat everyone at their first attempt. No-one will ever match Emil's achievement ever

I'm in complete agreement with you. Zatopek not only won gold medals in the 3 events that he ran (the 5000m, 10000m, and marathon), but he also set Olympic records in all 3 events! His time in the marathon was 6 MINUTES faster than the previous record! And oh, by the way, his marathon in the 1952 Olympic Games at Helsinki WAS HIS FIRST EVER MARATHON!

Well, it makes me only proud as I am Czech, all I wanted to say is that it is difficult to say who´s the best in the history..they all deserve respect..I know about Zátopek´s achievements and i had the luck to get to know how crazy into running he was..personally..but those were 2 hours of total fear for my parents :-))

While I agree with an earlier comment that Zapotek may not be the greatest ever Olympian, I stand firmly by my contention that his performance in the Helsinki Games was the greatest ever PERFORMANCE in Olympic history (gold medals and Olympic records in the 5000m, 10000m, and marathon). It is unfathomable that such a performance will EVER be duplicated.

You are right..to win 5km, 10km and Marathon during one Games will be hard to again :-)) Zátopek was out of this world..he used to practice running in big heavy army boots so that it would feel easy for him to run on the track :-)))

just ine question - can you calculate into metric system for me, pls :-)) Zátopek is a LEGEND. Would be interesting to see if he could keep up with the Africans..but we´ll never know, so let´s keep the good memories.
