this is for "whf1993" you are right when you say nothing would happen by pouring water on it, however the tailpipe isn't tempered. Even if it was tempered brand new, after they ran the car and heated it up and it was allowed to cool slowly it would have taken the tempering out of it, This is called ANEALING. Tempering is done by heating metal up and quenching it in either oil or water, and tempering is usually done in high carbon steel, not exhaust sheet metal, it has a low carbon content.
