Y'know, after enough time hearing this song, I realized this song was all well and good in context, but Joh Mayer changes it too much. I love the guitar, I love the feeling the song gives off, but it would be so unbelievably better if Mr. Mayer left the sung part alone. If he sang this song straight instead of changing it the way he did, this song would be five-times better than the original, but the way we sings it just makes me want to listen to Tom Petty.

You don't actually listen to lyrics, do you? The song is about broken hearts and regret. Tom Petty sang it as a sort of power ballad for reasons known only to him; John sings it in a style that matches the tone of the text.

I think this is just John Mayer paying tribute to a rock legend, Tom Petty. Free Fallin' is a beautiful song and I don't think he butchered it at all. It's just a completely different take on it, sad and mellow. And I like it just as much as the original which will always be just that: the original.
