Leonard Bernstein performs Beethoven's Ode to Joy - Finale

Back

Leonard Bernstein conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in Beethoven's Ode to Joy. This is the final part of the piece, which contains the incredible Prestissimo Finale.

This portion of the movement begins with the contrapuntal union of the Ode to Joy and the Church Theme from the previous clip by the full chorus.

After the choral fugue, the soloists return in a lighter, more carefree rendition of the Ode to Joy theme (2:32). Seizing on their excitement, the chorus join the soloists in the song of joy (3:10). Soon, however, the chorus falls silent as the soloists reflect one final time on the divine inspiration for joy and brotherhood with heart-rendingly beautiful cadenzas (4:13).

These cadenzas lead us to the Prestissimo finale. After a silence and a quick crescendo of strings (5:18-5:27), the entire cast, every chorus member and every player down to the triangle, launches into the finale with guns blazing. After one more interruption by a gigantic, surreal Maestoso (6:14-6:37), the orchestra charges full speed ahead to the final cadence.

Thank you ernestable, for posting this.
After watching these three clips, of this fantastic orchestra, and these illuminated soloists, I am speachless.
Only my tears can speak for me.
And, after watching Leonard Berstein, I will no longer lay claim as the invintor of the Air Guitar!

I see no indication that Obama believes in anything but pragmatism. So far his unique accomplishment in life is to be a successful candidate for office. Once elected he largely ignored the office he was elected to and began campaigning for the job on the next wrung up the pyramid of power. This has brought him, in 11 years, of almost constant campaigning to the top in heap. Truly "anybody can be President of the USA." Presumably, we will now get to see what in fact Barack Obama is all about.

My own actually, Sweden :J Or well.. we're currently under right wing govern but that's like the first time in 40 years and that time it was only for 4 years.

We DO have a bit higher taxes to offer universal healthcare but I can't say that the government interferes with our opinion or personal life what so ever

I would define a left wing society as a socialist society in which the means of production and distribution are not in private hands. They are owned by the state or by some worker's cooperative organization.. The provision of social security measures like healthcare is not socialism. Sweden was never a socialist state and therefore, from my point of view, never genuinely left wing.
CakesNshit (November 10, 2008 at 12:41 pm)
Well if you're thinking about socialism then sure since it's built on absolute power to the state :P

But I wouldn't say that Obama is anywhere close to be a socialist, he's more like a slightly left wing liberalist, that's kinda why I'm sceptic about TwistedGeneration's comment
