TF2 - How to play the spy.

Back

EDIT 2: Annotations! Nifty tool this is.

EDIT: A lot of changes have happened to the spy since I posted this video:

- For once, the teleporter trail will NOT appear under you as a spy if you are cloaked or disguised.
- The knife does about 60 damage when not backstabbing, for example you can kill a scout in 3 slashes.
- Backstab detection is really wonky now, and the backstab animation guarantees frustration when warping causes you to miss a lot of kills.
- Remember to cloak first, then disguise, otherwise if you disguise first and cloak, the smoke effect can blow your cover from a mile away.

-----

Decided to make a spy gameplay tutorial after being in a server and seeing spies trying out all sorts of interesting tactics such as "uncloaking in front of your face" and "running towards you disguised with your name".

This is just something based on my playstyle so you might say my tactics don't work, but I can usually come out on top of the scoreboard if the enemy team isn't overly paranoid.

I use certain terms you may not have heard such as:

Front - The area where most of the fighting takes place on a map. This constantly changes during the round and it's the place where you will most likely get shot if you get seen running towards the enemy base.

Blind spot - An area where the enemy team has no vision. Use these blind spots to uncloak safely prior to a backstab.

I haven't actually given any advice on when to use the disguise because basically you should be disguised at all times, except when you are inside your base. You can use the friendly disguise on your part of the map to confuse enemy spies. They won't expect that medic that ran behind them to instantly take them down.

True, but blending in is somehow easier

Demo-not shooting, camping on some stickies?
Engy-in the field has shotty out
Sniper-not all notice you not zoomed in
Pyro-short range not always firing

Heavy-spinning no medic
Medic-charge counter/healing)
Soldier-ROCKETS
Scout-jumping/speed
Spy-SPYcheck

Heck no sentry means no disguise for me, cloak in behind-commence the stabby-stab

Hitnrun is still the best tactic, blending in backfires rather sooner then later. Especially when paranoia sets in!

all disguises have weaknesses, pyro's tend to be at the front not at the back where you want to be, demo's are almost constantly firing, snipers smart people will notice if you aren't aiming, engies tend to have the wrench out (although smart engies will have the shotgun when wandering around), scouts aren't that bad but yeah slow scouts people tend to notice

the one that always works for me is demo man except put away your revolver and take out your knife

I always try to block anyone who moves in the opposite direction then everyone else, the spy might not have notice that I noticed he blocked me. Then when he walks past me, I give him a nice surprise by shooting him in the back :P

Best classes overall? I guess pyro/demo and sniper and in some cases engineer one thing is for sure DO NOT go medic or scout anyone with half a brain will spot you (nor charge counter or a slow scout for example :D)

Dangerous tactic if there is a pyro or heavy, heck any projectile makes you flicker. And it is a well know fact people always shoot in random directions trying to make you flicker. Stopping only increases the chance of you getting hit by a stray projectile. Or at least that's how I see it :D
arnold853 (December 2, 2008 at 6:54 pm)
Yea i use that tactic alot then they run by and u uncloak and go mcstabby behind there backs XD
arnold853 (December 2, 2008 at 6:37 pm)
But u dont really say what to do with pyros beside avoid theme like in dustbowl in cap a the pyro wouldve turned around and flamed if he saw me sap
smithyrusselhobbs92 (December 2, 2008 at 6:18 pm)
So how do you notice spies? And which are the best classes to disguise yourself as?
matrixmairo (December 2, 2008 at 3:19 pm)
hey has anyone tried useing a tactic where someones shooting you you cloak while running then when ur fully cloaked stop? the enemy might tink ur still running
